1. Good Research

We can’t deny the fact that mobile notary services are something new! So, it’s better to educate yourself on all the basics before opting for remote online notarization.

The first and foremost step should be asking yourself: “Is Remote Online Notary service legal in my state?”

Yes, that can be a possibility too. Because till this far, only 39 states have passed laws regarding the legalization of remote online notarization.

The states that have passed laws regarding the legalization of remote online notarization are
  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas

  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • and Wyoming.

Although the states as mentioned above have legalized RON. Out of all, these states passed laws regarding RON only. However, these laws are not in action;

  • Kansas
  • Illinois
  • New Mexico
  • New Hampshire

Possibly the laws will come to action in this year.

Note: Although adopting RON legalization has not been confirmed in some states, Temporary Legalization is into practice due to Covid- 19.

Due to the sudden invasion of COVID-19, many services got affected, and so was the notarization process. Because of the pandemic, many states permitted RON. However, they did not provide complete information regarding guidelines for carrying remote online notarization temporarily.

If the RON is legal in your state, you should have a basic idea about the state government’s basic guidelines to carry RON in your state.

Do you have all the tools?

It would be best to have all the necessities before choosing a Remote Online Notary. The notary carries RON by an audio-video call. So, you should have access to tools like a webcam, mike, computer, printer, and a secured internet connection are mandatory.

If you have a laptop, there is no need to buy a webcam; almost all of them already have one. Otherwise, computers, mike, and webcam are crucial to carrying the audio-video call effectively. These are necessary for an easy Face to Face interaction.

Other tools won’t be helpful if you don’t have a stable internet connection. Whether you are uploading your documents or trying to connect with a notary public over a video call, a stable internet connection is a must. So, make sure it is working. If there is an issue from you or the notary public’s end, the notary may cancel the notarization.

You will also require a cell phone to convert the soft copy of documents, which you will upload on the RON website portal.

Once your documents are notarized, you will need a printer to create copies of the documents sent via email by the notary public. A personal printer is not obligatory; you can also get a copy of your documents from a local shop. Although, as long as you have an electronic copy, there is no need to carry soft copies. Still, it’s advisable to keep photocopies of the Documents.

Be prepared with all the basic requirements

You should have all the documents you want to get notarized. Upload them on the website portal so that notaries will have access to those documents. For proper KBN, you should have ID proofs required for identity confirmation. So, to avoid useless embarrassment, it’s better to gather all the documents and identity proof that the notary will demand during the notarization process.

All the states have different requirements to verify the signer’s identity. The methods used in all state RON are:

  • ID Documents (for, e.g., driver’s license, state ID card, birth certificate).
  • Signer(you) to answer the question regarding Knowledge-Based Authentication.
  • Credible witnesses.
  • Notary to carry automated or electronic verification for Credential analysis.
  • Other identity verification methods.

You should be ready for all these identity verification methods. Although it might seem like a hectic procedure, it is too quick and simple. You just need to cooperate with the notary public, and the rest is easy.

Make sure your team is ready

If you are notarizing a document that requires more than one signer or even witnesses, it’s better to keep all the parties ready. They should be aware of the whole process and be there with all the documents during the audio-video call. For a smooth remote online notarization and tech, all the parties should have a better internet connection.

Now, if RON is legal in your state and you have the knowledge and tech required for notarization, you should find a legitimate online Notary Services provider on the internet.

You can also choose LottaLegal for the same. We offer RON service along with eNotary Service. Our notaries carry notarization as per the guidelines set by state governments.
